Well, the advantage of using the soul trap spell is you can make sure you only use it on things that have the right kind of souls for your larger gems, the disadvantage (for me) is that you have to remember to use it at the right time (I think it works for a few seconds, but I usually either forget, or cast it right when I'm attacking, and sometimes it wears off before they die). An alternative is to have a second weapon (not enchanted, or with a different enchantment such as fire) for when you've used up all your low-quality soul gems. Either way, you still have to have a good idea of a/ what empty gems you have and b/ what kind of soul the thing you're killing has.Another possibility is a mod such as Acquisitive Soul Gems (available both here and the Nexus, I think) which limits the gems to the appropriate sized soul. This does mean you waste some souls, but personally I prefer that to wasting gems.
It could be seen as a cheat, but personally I don't really find it is, I don't end up with massively better enchanting because of it, just a lot less irritation;) Some people just drop the under-filled gems on the floor and pick them up, which apparently 'empties' them, I've never tried it myself, though. As far as what has what kind of soul, I think giants have Greater and mammoths have Grand. The main sources, though, are high level Falmer and Draugr, can't remember exactly which ones, but basically the scarier they are, the bigger their soul (plain draugr are 'petty', I think). Fallout 4 stuck on loading screen xbox. (Humans also have grand souls, BUT they are 'black' rather than 'white' souls, and as such can only be trapped in black soul gems, rather than grand.
There is Unpleasant Magic at work in the making of black soul gems, I believe, so you may want to think about whether your character a/ knows and b/ cares about that.). Originally posted by Axelrand:I now travel with Lydia carrying my Grand and Greater soul gems to prevent them filling with common or lesser soulsIf that happens, just drop the gem, and pick it up, it will be empty again. If you do not have black soul gems or the Black Star, then, as suggested, Mammoths are a good choice (assuming you already have the equipment and skill level to easily clear giant camps).
Also, even though the giants only have greater souls, the potions created from their toes can be worth the price of a filled grand soul gem (or more than one if your alchemy is good enough).Soul gems can be mined in Blackreach, and they will randomly (even if not often) include the black ones. If you have those, any human, even the lowest level bandit, will fill them.
Thanx all, excellent advice as always! I'm totally with gnewna on the mammoth thing.
Mind you, taking on those high level Falmer and Draugr is no stroll in the park! I'm liking the soul-trap bow idea! You know, sometimes I wonder if I'm cut out for Skyrim. I may not be bad♥♥♥♥♥♥♥enuff for some of it's ways, like killing Giants or Mammoths. I got quite upset when I had to kill a whole camp of Forsworn, coz they attacked me. I think what upset me most, was that they were mostly women, well, girls almost, and apart from their psychopathic tendencies, seemed like an otherwise quite nice eco-tribe.:).
In need of some soul gems to recharge your enchanted weapons but not sure how to get the souls into them? Let me show you how!Step 1)Get empty soul gems to fill. You'll need the gems to fill up with souls before you can even get started. You'll find these just about anywhere in your travels, they are literally all over the place. You don't need to go out and find them at all if you have the money to just buy them. Any shopkeeper who deals in magical or alchemical ingredients will stock up on these as well. Keep in mind, you can fill larger soul gems with smaller souls. If you are going to go out and try to farm a lot of smaller souls, don't bring any bigger soul gems or you'll fill those up by accident too.
Step 2)Get a soul trapping weapon, or the soul trap spell. This spell can be found from many merchants who sell spells, it is fairly common so if they don't have it in stock when you first go see them, wait a day or two and try again. If you are looking to farm a large number of souls a little easier though, get a weapon that can trap them instead.
These can sometimes be seen sold in shops, or you can enchant one yourself. Once you are armed with either of these, head out to find animals to steal the souls from.
